CHRONOMÉTRIE FERDINAND BERTHOUD. The FINEST WATCHMAKING we have seen so far. A MUST see!
#ferdinandberthoud #chopard #watchesandwonders2024 @FerdinandberthoudCh
Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud. The date was Tuesday, September 22, 2015; the place, Paris. At the Yacht Club de France, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele officially unveiled Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud, the fruit of many years’ exploration of the works of MasterWatchmaker Ferdinand Berthoud. At a time when standardization, generic movements, and ever-shorter times to market had become the norm, the manufacture chose to go against the flow by offering the fruit of patient creation: an entire universe, commensurate with the stature of the man who inspired it: Ferdinand Berthoud (1727-1807). Ferdinand Berthoud, Watchmaker-Mechanic by appointment to the French King and Navy from the time of Louis XV through until the Empire, was one of the greatest figures in watchmaking. He wrote a large number of treatises and is considered to be the father of timekeeping for the French Navy. He was also responsible for some of the most significant advances in the determination of longitude, the key to supremacy on the high seas in the eighteenth century. Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud set out to live up to this legacy. The goal has remained unchanged: namely, the quest for precision. Implementation was preceded by a long period of meticulous historical research. A large number of timepieces made by the master were acquired, together with first editions of his watchmaking treatises. Each acquisition was carefully analyzed, documented, and restored. The collection is now housed in a dedicated private museum at the manufacture in Fleurier, Val-de-Travers - the district in which Ferdinand Berthoud himself was born in 1727. Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud's approach is based on two pillars: honoring the master's legacy, and pursuing his quest for precision. The innovation that defined Berthoud's watchmaking genius has been transposed to the twenty-first century. The movement has been designed, produced, and fully hand-decorated using traditional tools, then assembled and adjusted in the manufacture, before being officially certified by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC ... Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres). The Chronométrie workshop is located in a delightfully wooded area facing the “Chapeau de Napoléon”, a hill perched above the village of Fleurier and nicknamed after its evocative shape reminiscent of the Emperor’s two-cornered hat. Its privileged location in this tranquil setting instils a sense of peace and serenity provides a perfect working environment for the watchmakers in the exercise of their craft.
Ferdinand Berthoud timepieces require ancestral know-how combined with cutting-edge technology, two qualities fully mastered by company's engineers and craftsmen. Machines have no place within Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud. Entirely hand-decorated using traditional tools identical to those used by Ferdinand Berthoud, each component, even if invisible, contributes to the beauty of the movement. Performing the numerous and complex operations of traditional decoration therefore requires years of learning, considerable mastery and a great deal of patience. Chamfer is a perfect example: the hand of the craftsman forming the bevel to be polished must be safe, delicate and meticulous so that the edges of the pieces shine with incomparable brilliance. Specular (also known as black or mirror) polishing is another illustration, involving polishing the surfaces in such a way as to ensure that light is reflected in one direction only. At each stage in the manufacture of these components, the finishes are checked under a 6.7x loupe. The Geneva Hallmark (Poinçon de Genève) is "only" checked under a 2,5x loupe!!! Since no imperfection is tolerated, this higher than usual degree of magnification ensures that no detail, however small, goes unnoticed. Such is the vision of watchmaking excellence cultivated by Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud.

El bisel no se queda bien centrado a las 12, es increible que un reloj tan caro no consiga eso.
Thanks for an amazing video. I just received a PAM968 and It was fantastic to see how the watch was manufactured and built. Always wanted a bronzo since the release of the original 382.
Lol, I just grabbed my 420Z Zenith for a guided walkthrough of my watch's movement. That was kinda cool. Glad I own a raw 400-series movement, and the HW version makes it more visible (I just thought it was kinda funny and one less thing to wear down). I also have a 4002 for a dolled up and automatic variant/iteration of it, so if anyone ever said it doesn't make sense to have a non-automatic "El Primero", I could counter with "I have one of those, too".
Im obsessed with the 30mm I will save money to get one with the diamonds 💙
The gmt blue dial ....❤ Your wrist shots are apriciated.

@@WatchAdvisor for sure. 💪
Went to Longines Geneva yesterday and tried it in 39. Gorgeous watch. But the 24 hand does jump when adjusting the hour hand. And this does look cheap indeed.
Thanks for sharing! This should in fact not be the case! When reviewing the watch I thought I got a pre-series watch…
You might not care but I’m going to say it anyway, the 41 looks way too big for your wrist.
Thanks for sharing! But remember… tastes are different…
I don’t know if they sell that product in USA. Is there other similar cleaning tablets product?

I do enjoy Hublot watches. They are not boring but daring. The pioneer of evolution.
True, thanks for sharing!
Unfortunately for usa buyers this brand is challenging to buy here.
Which one are you interested in? Maybe I can help through the HQ in Glashütte…
How do you set it? Love this piece of art
Through the crown as mentioned in the video…
If you're reading the comments, I've got a few suggestions for your consideration: Symmetry: The watch could benefit from improved symmetry. The Moon phase is well-placed, but the large date should be positioned beneath the logo. Also, could you consider moving the power reserve indicator to the back of the case? Legibility: The current design suffers from poor legibility due to the similar style of the applied indices and the hour/minute hands. These should be redesigned to a smaller size or removed altogether. Instead, I recommend using Latin numerals at the 3, 6, and 9-hour marks. Case Design: To enhance wearability, decrease the overall case thickness and size. Adding a circle of guilloché to the dial would provide a refined finishing touch. These adjustments should enhance both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the watch.
Thanks for sharing your passion with us!
If I had $$$ MB&f woukd definitely be one of my collected brands. With Urwerk. All their pieces are so different. ❤️ art

@@WatchAdvisor I just purchased the stainless steel on bracelet and ordered a separate orange strap. Had they offered it in all yellow gold, I may have opted for it.
Do you prefer it with caucciù or steel bracelet?
I am a fan of rubber straps…
What's the fair market value of this watch in July, 2024?
7000-9000 Euro
Great video Alexander and an interesting insight on how these beautiful watches are made. Thank you.🙏

Very difficult to give an advice… best is to try it on your wrist and then let your heart decide… it won’t lie…
Fabulous video, great journalism, enthusiasm and information
Thanks for sharing your passion with us and your kind feedback!
I would rather say the white is more of a lifestyle watch than the black one.
I disagree! The readability of time couldn’t be better under all possible conditions from the white dial…
Montblanc is stepping up
Yep! Thanks for sharing!
Interesting walk through, well done! I love that they use a toothpick to hold the part during sandblasting 😂 Shows that no matter what price point, workers and artisans need to find solutions, and sometimes it is as simple and effective like that 👍💪

Montblanc also owns Minerva so they have exceptional movements as well. This company is one of the most underrated
Yes, that’s very true! I wish the brand Minerva as it was would still exist and manufacture watches under that exceptional name…
Amazing.
Thanks for sharing! May I ask… What impressed you the most?
@@WatchAdvisor The most impressive thing was the fact they take so long to finish a piece, them putting quality first even if it takes a long time to do. I also loved the story of the Japanese collector who disassembled the watch to check both sides of the components were finished to the highest level and of course they were.
I hear you!!! That Japanese collector kept me speechless as well 😜
Hi Alexander, great review as always! How would you compare this navitimer with the new Sinn 903 St. Sinn managed to make its Navitimer 200m water resistant while eleminating the extra crown. I like the Sinn better manly due to it being affordable, but the Breitling navi seems more refined. I am looking forward to watching you review the new Sinn 903. Best regards!
Sinn has for sure the better case, Breitling by far the better calibres… The Sinn still is a very good watch and yes less expensive… I wouldn’t hesitate buying one… Keep us posted please…
@WatchAdvisor I'm really considering buying the Sinn 903 St II. The price seems fair to me. It does not feel out of proportion, like the increased prices of the Breitling or other Swiss watchmakers. Of course, there is inflation, high R&D consts, and so on, but these prices, if artificially increased for the sake of exclusivity, are going to alienate a lot of watch enthusiasts.
@@aureliussch.2185 I hear and understand you!! With every Sinn you are buying a very, very good watch sold a very very fair price… Go for it! Share some thoughts with us once you bought it…
Gilt gonna match my chains..love it!
Just got one! Love it. Great work guys.
Congratulations! May your Longines continue to always show you happy seconds, minutes and hours!
After seeing a lotof watch community debates whether the current 36 is too small or perfect size I’m pretty sure rolex would best come out with a minor update of explorer36 with an actual diameter of 36.xx ,20 mm lug width and end all debates for a true perfect size rolex for all.
Thanks for sharing your passion with us!
Very interesting video, I have researched the development of early Ferdinand Berthoud maritime chronometers (e.g. 1760 Horloge Marine n° 1), their tests during sea trials ( 376 days for Horloges Marine n°6 and n°8 by Charles Pierre d'Evreux de Fleurieu onboard l'Isis in 1768) and the later "montre a longitude" on swivel base (1796). An interesting naval history up to their operational distribution onboard French naval vessels and stockage in Brest (1786). Why not make a video about this fascinating maritime history as Ferdinand Berthoud was the first to house a maritime chronometer in a wooden box, setting the standard for future maritime chronometer use! #Berthoud #longitude #MoonwatchUniverse #chronometer
Thanks for sharing your passion with us! In fact we should tell more stories about Ferdinand Berthoud and what he has achieved …. The most impressive for me was to see in the brands museum in Fleurier how quickly he was able to miniaturize his developments starting from gigantic clocks to become highly accurate pocket watches in only a few years later … this is mind blowing if you consider the fact that he had no CNC machines etc. and he had to built everything himself by hand ….

This is certainly fantastic watchmaking. And I’ve even been thinking while watching the video that these watches aren’t overpriced event though they are very expensive. Thanks for sharing !

Thanks for the great content. Water Resistance vs Waterproof. Does it matter if the Defy diver is water resistant and not waterproof? My Submariner is waterproof. So it's possible to use that terminology. Should I assume the Defy is not truly waterproof?
Water-resistance and waterproof is the same This Zenith is up to 600 meters/1969 feet waterproof and/or the case resists water pressure up to 600 meters/1969 feet
